PRACTICE 1
Through these two projects, I explored the concepts of "Otherness" and "Uncertainty" translating them into simple visual stories, moving from a traditional painting to a digital photograph.
In the first piece, Otherness, I looked at how society pushes people to fit in and follow the same routine. After taking time to think about this and getting ideas from artists who use simple shapes, I painted a large crowd of empty black outlines to show people who just follow the rules and lose their spark, but I painted one single figure solid red to represent a person who decides to break away from the crowd and fill their life with happiness, passion, and their own true identity.
In the second piece, Uncertainty, I wanted to capture that confused feeling we get when we have to make a hard choice, especially when we are torn between the digital world on our phones and the real world around us. Inspired by artists who paint motion and speed, I took a photo where the desk and objects stay perfectly clear while my hands are just a blurry ghost, showing that even though our surroundings stay still, we are the ones shaking and hesitating on the inside when we do not know what to do.
This whole process taught me that art does not just have to be decorative because simple choices like picking one bright color or changing how fast a camera takes a picture can tell a whole story, and I realized that you do not need to pack a piece with a million details to make it powerful since sometimes less is more.
Most importantly, this has completely changed how I think about my future job as a teacher because Otherness taught me that students who think differently or do not just follow the crowd are not problems to fix but are the bright individuals who bring life to the classroom, so my job will be to give them a safe space where they can be exactly who they want to be instead of forcing them to fit into a mold. At the same time, Uncertainty reminded me that when a student is hesitating or struggling to find an answer they are not stuck or lazy but are just thinking deeply, which means that in my classroom I want to celebrate the trial-and-error process of learning rather than only caring about the final test score.
